What's in a booster box

A Japanese 30th CELEBRATION box holds 20 packs with 6 cards each, and all of them are foil. That makes it a shorter box than a normal Japanese set, which has 30 packs of 5 cards, but every pack is built around the anniversary:

  • One Pikachu in every pack. The set has a 30-card Pikachu subset (017–046), each drawn by a different illustrator, starting with Ken Sugimori's Pikachu at 017.
  • One Basic Energy in every pack. The eight Basic Energy cards were designed by the artist YOSHIROTTEN, who also made the two FUR cards.
  • No guaranteed hits. The Pokémon Company hasn't published pull rates for the set, so no specific card is guaranteed in a box.

How the set is built

  • Main set (001–103). 73 regular cards plus the 30 Pikachu. Ten of the cards are Pokémon ex: Fuecoco ex 009, Greninja ex 015, Pikachu ex 047 and 048, Mewtwo ex 055, Mew ex 057, Sylveon ex 059, Gengar ex 076, Jirachi ex 081 and Salamence ex 088.
  • Secret rares (104–135). 20 Art Rares (104–123), 10 Special Art Rares (124–133) and the two new Futuristic Rares (134–135). Unlike most Mega Evolution sets, there are no SR or MUR cards.
  • Classic Collection (136–165). 30 reprints of famous cards from earlier eras, including Charizard 137, Shining Celebi 141, Dark Tyranitar 144, Rayquaza EX 154 and Magikarp 165. They carry a "C" mark next to the set code and are not legal in the Standard format.
  • Basic Energy. Eight foil Basic Energy cards by YOSHIROTTEN.

Chase cards

These are the cards most collectors open the set for:

Card Number Rarity
Mew ex 135/103 FUR
Mewtwo ex 134/103 FUR
Pikachu ex (night) 127/103 SAR
Pikachu ex (day) 126/103 SAR
Mew ex 129/103 SAR
Mewtwo ex 128/103 SAR
Sylveon ex 130/103 SAR
Gengar ex 131/103 SAR
Charizard 137/103 Classic Collection
Pikachu (Ken Sugimori) 017/103 Pikachu subset

The remaining SARs are Fuecoco ex 124, Greninja ex 125, Jirachi ex 132 and Salamence ex 133. Collectors have also reported three unnumbered Mew cards in red, green and blue, marked R/RGB, G/RGB and B/RGB. They are not in any official card list, and nobody knows how rare they are.

FUR – the new top rarity

FUR stands for Futuristic Rare, a brand-new rarity introduced with 30th CELEBRATION. There are only two FUR cards in the Japanese set – Mewtwo ex 134/103 and Mew ex 135/103 – both designed by YOSHIROTTEN, and they sit above the SARs as the set's top cards. You can read more about how Japanese rarities work in our guide to Japanese rarities.

Japanese vs. English 30th Celebration

The English set, 30th Celebration, came out on the same day, but the two versions are built differently:

  • Different numbering. The English main list has 128 cards, with secret rares numbered 129–158: Illustration Rares 129–146, Special Illustration Rares 147–156, and the two FUR cards as 157 (Mewtwo ex) and 158 (Mew ex). The Classic Collection is numbered separately.
  • Different packs. An English pack has 5 foil cards plus 1 foil Basic Energy, again with one Pikachu guaranteed.
  • Different Pikachu numbers. The 30 Pikachu are 023–052 in English instead of 017–046.

So a card's number tells you straight away which version you're holding. If you collect the English set, you'll find English 30th Celebration cards among our Pokémon singles.

Open or keep sealed?

Because every card is foil and a box has only 20 packs, opening 30th CELEBRATION is quick and feels very different from a normal set. If you want the 30 Pikachu artist cards, opening is the whole point – there's one in every pack. Anniversary sets are also popular to keep sealed, but nobody can promise how any set will be valued in the future, so buy what you'll enjoy either way.
